Canada and USA visit to expand strategies in the fight against Queensland fruit fly
6 April 2018
Australia’s fight against Queensland fruit fly travelled to Canada and the USA in 2018.
Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Coordinator Ross Abberfield travelled to Canada
and the USA as a member of the Rotary International Vocational Training Team (VTT), to
build and share information on pest management strategies.
The trip was an opportunity to compare fruit fly specific horticultural research, Sterilised
Insect Technique development, area wide management strategies, protected cropping
approaches, farming practices and community engagement across the three nations.
The focus was on how Canada and the USA are managing local government agencies, the
general community, grower groups and the horticultural industry to establish the level of
ownership that is required to control the economic threat that endemic pests are posing to
the horticultural sector.
Ross, together with other VTT members Les Mitchell (Team Leader),
Elizabeth Mace and Jonathan Van Popering were presented at the 2018
Rotary District 9790 Conference as the district’s outgoing VTT to Canada
and the USA, which was held in Yarrawonga/Mulwala on 25 Mach 2018.
